Shopping at the Royal Naval Dockyard Bermuda

Shopping at the Royal Naval Dockyard Bermuda really means shopping at the Clock Tower Mall in Sandy’s Parish 441-
234-3342. The Clock Tower Mall was once the hub of the great Britich Naval Dockyard and, to me, the best thing about this place is its overpowering historical atmosphere.

It’s not been too long since this whole area was bustling with thousands of British seamen, and it still shows. The great Clocktower building is as intimidating today as it must have been a hundred years ago. I’ve spent many an hour wandering the lower and upper galleries of this great stone edifice; it borders on the hypnotic. There are some 30 shops and stores in this rather strange mall that some
have compared favorably with the Burlington Arcade in London. I
don’t agree. If you’re looking for casual clothing, though, you might like to stop by the Bermuda Railway Company. Their line is a quality one, though the prices might be a little on the expensive side. In fact, I found that to be true throughout the Dockyard shops. Even so, if you take into account that it’s all tax-free, you’re probably going to walk away with a bargain or two. One of the places I make for when I’m in the Dockyard area is the Ship’s Inn Book Shop. It smells as great as it looks and there’s always a surprise among their rare and antique books and first editions. Another shop also has a special appeal to me. As a photographer I always like to enjoy the art of others that do what I do and, for me, there’s no better place to that than at Picturesque Bermuda 441-234-3342, where the name says it all. The store is always full of outstanding images of the islands, and they’re all for sale. Finally, for the smokers, there’s the Humidor_ 441-234-1017. Here you can buy Cuban cigars. But, if you’re an American, you’ll have to smoke them while you’re in Bermuda; you can’t take them into the United States.

Time for lunch? You’ll find several great restaurants and cafés in and around the Dockyard, including Beethoven’s and the Green Frog (see the Dining section). While you’re in Sandy’s Parish, if you have time and transport, you should drop by Dean’s Bakery & Deli, Manchester Street, Somerset Village. This is a great place to get a sandwich or something a little more sweet. Their scones are light and fluffy, turnovers filled with gooey delights, and the muffins are the best on the islands; my opinion, folks. 441-234-2918.
